Semyonov’s 25,000 inhabitants have prospered thanks to the country's famous matrioshka dolls. But orders are slowing, and with them, the rest of the city, as well. Even the matryoshka dolls are looking glum. In this factory Russia's biggest producer of the traditional wooden toys it's hard to keep spirits up. And yet, Antonina loves her dolls putting evident care into her work. Even so, she's had her salary cut in half over the past few months, meaning even more belt-tightening. Antonina Chertishieva, employee, Khokhloma factory, "Fruits are really expensive; we buy a lot fewer. We've totally stopped buying meat. We eat only what we can grow in our vegetable garden." On average, workers here earn 70 Euros a month down from 200 a few months back. The matryoshka doll, it seems, is less popular in tough times. Sales are down 20 percent from last year. Nikolai Korotkov, chief executive, Khokhloma factory, "We've reduced our production. We decided not to lay off workers but instead to shorten their working week. We signed an agreement with employees and now they only work four days a week." Four days a week and sometimes less. It all depends on incoming orders. Valentina's been painting the dolls for 40 years, and made it through the economic crises of the post-Soviet era. But nothing compares to this. Valentina Makarova, employee, Khokhloma factory, "This is the toughest moment. At the end of communism, we weren't paid on time, but we knew that we'd end up getting our salary. And now we work a day, and then do nothing for the next two days!" And it's not just these workers who are affected. The factory, with its 1,000 employees, is the driving force of the economy in the city of Semyonov. And that means everyone is feeling the pinch.

Videocrux
<media:category>News</media:category><media:keywords>An entire city dependent on a doll, Semyonov's 25, But orders are slowing, and with them, the rest of the city, as well, Even the matryoshka dolls are looking glum, And yet, Even so, meaning even more belt-tightening, Antonina Chertishieva, employee, Khokhloma factory, "Fruits are really expensive; we buy a lot fewer, We've totally stopped buying meat, " On average, The matryoshka doll, it seems, is less popular in tough times, Sales are down 20 percent from last year, Nikolai Korotkov, chief executive, "We've reduced our production, We decided not to</media:keywords>

Sales of dolls dropped by 20 %

<img src="http://thumbnails.truveo.com/0008/C2/69/C269B47E28FD37EFF98992.jpg"><br>On average, workers here earn 70 Euros a month down from 200 a few months back.
