Corey Barksdale has exhibited his artwork at the Atlanta Dogwood festival, Decatur Art Festival, Virginia-Highlands Art Festival, National Black Art Festival, Atlanta Jazz Festival, Artsplosure in Raleigh North Carolina, Art Festival in Paducah, Kentucky, One of a Kind Show in Chicago, etc. Decatur, GA artist Corey Barksdale has painted for audiences in the city of Atlanta, This video was created by Atlanta & Decatur Fine Artist Corey Barksdale. Please visit Corey's website. http://www.coreybarksdale.com/ The song was written by a married couple, songwriters Felice and Boudleaux Bryant. They wrote "Rocky Top" in only ten minutes in 1967. The Bryants were working in Gatlinburg on a collection of slow-tempo songs for a project for Archie Campbell and Chet Atkins. Writing the fast-paced "Rocky Top" served as a temporary diversion for them. Recorded by the Osborne Brothers in 1967, the song was a top 40 hit on the country music charts in early 1968. Although a staple of their concerts, the song did not achieve mass popularity until Lynn Anderson had a hit with it in 1970, and when the "Pride of the Southland" University of Tennessee marching band used it for one of their drills in 1972. The song was very popular and was officially adopted as a state song in 1982. In the 1970s, the song achieved such popularity among bar crowds that the Chapel Hill, North Carolina, old-time band the Red Clay Ramblers [1] national tours included a crowd-pleasing satire informally titled "Play 'Rocky Top' (or I'll Punch Your Lights Out.)"[2] The original "Rocky Top" song describes a place called Rocky Top, Tennessee, which is one of the three peaks of Thunderhead Mountain in Tennessee (located in the Smoky Mountains) in the...

blip.tv

<media:category>Entertainment</media:category>

Atlanta Artist Corey Barksdale John Coltrane Jazz Sketch GA

<img src="http://thumbnails.truveo.com/0000/0D/53/0D538D9AC6E32874BF4A1A.jpg"><br>John Coltrane sketch by Atlanta Georgia Artist Corey Barksdale. "Coltrane is at the top of my list when it comes to jazz musicians," says Barksdale. A Coltrane recording he particularly enjoys is Africa. "Coltrane is improvisational in the piece, but he has structure in his sound. I like the freedom that he has when he's playing Africa. It's rhythmic and free." Barksdale admires Miles Davis with equal measure for his rawness. "Davis was into experimenting and trying different things with his sound. He was a catalyst for other musicians and he was a pioneer in his time, all without commercializing the music." So what is it about jazz that inspires Barksdale's creativity as a painter? "I love the improvisation of jazz musicians from the '50s and '60s. There was a lot of experimentation going on. In much the same way, I want to create something totally new with my paintings each time - to be different in the way I portray certain subjects." Barksdale clearly appreciates traditional jazz artists - the Jazz Crusaders and Sonny Rollins included - but he also gets a certain amount of inspiration from legendary contemporaries like Joe Sample and David Sanborn. John Coltrane was born on September 23, 1926. Coltrane grew up in High Point NC, moving to Philadelphia PA in June 1943. He was inducted into the Navy in 1945, returning to civilian life in 1946. Coltrane worked a variety of jobs through the late forties until (still an alto saxophonist) he joined Dizzy Gillespie's big band in 1949. He stayed with Gillespie through the band's breakup in May 1950 and (now on tenor saxophone) worked with Gillespie's small group until April 1951, when he returned to Philadelphia to go to school. In early 1952 he joined Earl Bostic's band, and in 1953 he joined Johnny Hodges's small group (during that saxophonist's short sabbatical from Duke Ellington's orchestra), staying until mid 1954. Coltrane was freelancing in Philadelphia in the summer of 1955 when he received a call from trumpeter...

blip.tv

<media:category>Entertainment</media:category>

Atlanta Georgia Artist Corey Barksdale Mural Painting Folk Art & Jazz Art African American Art

<img src="http://thumbnails.truveo.com/0000/D3/F7/D3F78305CFB6D8CC855C10.jpg"><br>Atlanta Georgia Artist Corey Barksdale large scale wall mural art. Murals of sorts date to prehistoric times, such as the paintings on the Caves of Lascaux in southern France, and many ancient murals have survived in Egyptian tombs, and in Pompeii. The term became more famous with the Mexican "muralista" art movement (Diego Rivera, David Siqueiros, or Jos&#233; Orozco). There are many different styles and techniques. The best-known is probably fresco, which uses water soluble paints with a damp lime wash, a rapid use of the resulting mixture over a large surface, and often in parts (but with a sense of the whole). The colors lighten as they dry. The marouflage method has also been used for millennia. Murals today are painted in a variety of ways, using oil or water based media. The styles can vary from abstract to trompe-l'&#339;il (a French term for "fool" or "trick the eye"). Today, the beauty of a wall mural has become much more widely available with a technique whereby a painting or photographic image is transferred to poster paper which is then pasted to a wall surface to give the effect of either a hand-painted mural or realistic scene. Mural at the American British Cowdray Hospital in M&#233;xico D.F. by Veronica Ruiz de Velasco in 1989. Murals are important in that they bring art into the public sphere. Due to the size, cost, and work involved in creating a mural, muralists must often be commissioned by a sponsor. Often it is the local government or a business, but many murals have been paid for with grants of patronage. For artists, their work gets a wide audience that otherwise might not set foot in an art gallery. For the city, it gets beautified by a work of art. Murals exist where people live and work and affect their daily lives. Murals can be a relatively effective tool of social emancipation or achieving a political goal. Murals have sometimes been created against the law or have been commissioned by local bars and coffeeshops. Often, the visual eff...

blip.tv

<media:category>Entertainment</media:category>

Atlanta Artist Corey Barksdale BB King Sketch Jazz Art Arts

<img src="http://thumbnails.truveo.com/0001/23/C5/23C551FCC6103CF91D3621.jpg"><br>Atlanta artist Corey Barksdale has created a video about the life of famous Blues musician BB King. As a painter, Corey Barksdale explores the artistic landscape inspired by the music of jazz greats like Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Charlie Parker. The result is a stunning collection of paintings that celebrate the jazz experience. Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) February 5, 2005 -- As a painter, Corey Barksdale's work is continually inspired by jazz. "It frees me to do what I feel when I'm painting," Barksdale says. When he's in the studio creating, he often listens to jazz greats like Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and John Coltrane. The result is a stunning collection of more than 30 paintings that celebrate the jazz experience. B. B. King arrived in Memphis for the first time in 1946 to work as a musician, but after a few months of hardship he left, going back to Mississippi. There he decided to prepare himself better for the next visit and returned to Memphis two years later. Initially he worked at the local R&B radio channel WDIA as a singer. In 1949, he began recording songs under contract with Los Angeles-based RPM Records. Many of King's early recordings were produced by Sam Phillips, who later founded Sun Records. King was also a disc jockey in Memphis, where he gained the nickname "Beale Street Blues Boy", later shortened to "B. B." Before his RPM contract, B. B. had debuted on Bullet Records by issuing the single "Miss Martha King" (1949), which got a bad review in Billboard magazine and did not chart well. In the 1950s, B. B. King became one of the most important names in R&B music, amassing an impressive list of hits including "You Know I Love You," "Woke Up This Morning," "Please Love Me," "When My Heart Beats like a Hammer," "Whole Lotta Love," "You Upset Me Baby," "Every Day I Have the Blues," "Sneakin' Around," "Ten Long Years," "Bad Luck," "S...

blip.tv

<media:category>Entertainment</media:category>

Jazz Art Art Papers Art & Roswell Art Decatur GA Art Corey Barksdale

<img src="http://thumbnails.truveo.com/0004/92/E9/92E905AA5F41C1C1AE5A32.jpg"><br>A video of Corey Barksdale artwork at the 2008 Art Papers Art Auction and Roswell Cultural Art Center.
