People can attend the live performances and interactwith the video-game from all over the world. The performersnever meet their public in person, their relation is mediated bythe avatars. Their contribution to PERFORMA 07 will be thereenactment of three historical performances staged in SecondLife. Eva and Franco Mattes will perform live from Artists Space;those unable to attend the live performance are invited toparticipate in Second Life at Odyssey (4pm SL time)Within Synthetic Performances space, matter, body and actionare radically different from traditional performance art. Feelings likepain and pleasure are completely abstract, mental. The performerleaves sweat, weariness and pain to the machine. In a SyntheticPerformance everything is mediated, nothing is direct, everythingis artificial, nothing is natural.Eva and Franco Mattes aka 0100101110101101.ORG are a coupleof restless European con-artists who use unconventional communicationtactics to obtain the largest visibility with minimal effort. Past worksinclude staging a hoax involving a completely made-up artist, rippingoff the Holy See and spreading a computer virus as a work of art.Since January 2007 the Mattes have been working on a series ofreenactments of historical performances in the synthetic world SecondLife. So far the series includes: Chris Burden's Shoot, Vito Acconci'sSeedbed, Valie Export's Tapp und Tastkino and the ongoing JosephBeuys' 7000 Oaks.

September 9 - 13, 2008Amanda Coogan:Yellow A durational performance curated by Marina Abramovic This "Tableau Vivant" features the artist dressed in a large yellow dress, continuously washing her skirt in a bucket of soap water, while a piano piece by Franz Schubert is played intermittently. The work refers to the Irish tradition of Magdalene Laundries, institutions that housed "fallen" women, where they were to give penance for their sins by working in the laundry. Amanda Coogan's durational performances have been staged internationally at venues such as the Venice Biennale, Liverpool Biennale, and the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. She lives and works in Dublin and Berlin.When Time Becomes Form is an ongoing performance series that explores and questions issues of concentration, will power, and determination, and uses the entire gallery space for up to 8 hours during each day of its presentation.

The sisters were raised with intense psychological and spiritual discussion regarding behavior, relationships, and truth. Their work has been included in the traveling exhibition "Uncertain States of America: American Art in the 3rd Millennium" curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist, Daniel Birnbaum, and Gunnar B. Kvaran and in the Second Moscow Biennal of Contemporary Art.
